10 June 2024

The exhibition "Mn. Serra i Vilaró (1879 - 1969). 50 anys del llegat d’un pioner" continues its tour of Catalonia five years after its opening in Tarragona in 2019. This exhibition, promoted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of the archaeologist and ecclesiastic Joan Serra i Vilaró, was inaugurated on June 3rd at the Arxiu Comarcal del Berguedà, in Berga, coinciding with the International Archives Week, and can be seen until July 12th.

The exhibition will extend its stay in the Berguedà region with the arrival also in Bagà, from July 27th at the Palau de Pinós, where it can be visited throughout the month of August. The exhibition premiered in 2019 at the Public Library of Tarragona within the program of events with which the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya celebrated the figure of Serra i Vilaró, key in the excavations of monuments such as the Early Christian Necropolis of Tarragona.

A leading figure in Catalan archaeology

The exhibition "Mn. Serra i Vilaró (1879 - 1969). 50 anys del llegat d’un pioner" was the result of the collaboration between the Department of Culture, the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona (MNAT), the Diocesan and Regional Museum of Solsona, the Archdiocesan Historical Archive of Tarragona and the Historical Archive of Cardona. Its aim is to highlight the legacy of Serra i Vilaró, considered a leading figure in Catalan archaeology.

Throughout its tour, the exhibition introduces visitors to the biography of Serra i Vilaró, who was an ecclesiastic and historian, and its connection, first, with the Museum of Solsona. As for his work as an archaeologist, highlights his involvement in the excavations of the Necropolis, the Forum of the Colony and the walls of Tarragona, as well as his work as a historian and as an ecclesiastic.

Since 2019, the exhibition has been on display in venues such as the Public Library of Tarragona, the Early Christian Necropolis of Tarragona ( venue managed by the MNAT) or the Cultural Park of the Salt Mountain of Cardona during 2020. The itinerancy is now resumed in Berguedà, a region to which Serra y Vilaró was also closely linked and where he served as a priest in the towns of Casserres and Bagà.

Dissemination project

The exhibition was part of an intense program of activities around the figure of Serra i Vilaró promoted in 2019 and 2020 from the Department of Culture, which was partially interrupted by the Covid pandemic.

The work in favor of the dissemination and conservation of the legacy of Serra i Vilaró also continues from other areas, as is the case of the project of recovery and access to his documentation. A project of the Department of Culture and the Servei de Coordenació de la Xarxa d'Arxius Comarcals that involves the development of a virtual and interactive map of the institutions where Serra i Vilaró's own documentation is deposited or refers to it, the detailed identification of the types of documents and the digitization and dissemination of a selection.
